Only Fools Rely on the Possiblity of Moderating Islam
C. Holland Taylor and the Libforall Foundation hopes to battle extremism by being a presence in the world's largest Muslim country. Is he wasting his time?
Islam, a "religion" that was built efforts of a brigand from Arabia, was spread by the sword throughout much of the world and on several occasions almost conquered and overspread Europe. To be fair, in some places, Christianity used the same tactic, but Christianity moved on and Islam did not.
The world over Muslims use the same brutal tactics to spread Islam and to enforce the tenets and structure of Islamic society, tenets that would crush the freedoms that upon which the West was built.
it is true that many Muslims don't want extremists to be the face of Islam in the world. Most Muslims do, however, approve of freedom-killing Sharia, law based on the Koran and other Islamic writings. Sharia follows closely on the heels of Muslim conquest or occupation, or when Muslims become a majority or gain power.
Examples of this historical lesson are everywhere in the Muslim world and even in the contemporary world, often against the will of the majority. Sharia is is being implemented in Nigeria where only part of the country is Muslims. Efforts are being made to force the non-Muslim section to submit to this rule.
Even in Iraq, in spite of all the efforts of the American government to the contrary, the framers of Iraqi Constitution are being pressured by Islamic scholars and clerics to force Sharia on the population, an act that would worsen the plight of women and minorities in Iraq. Ironically these groups had more rights under Saddam Hussein than under Sharia in a "free" Iraq.
Moderate are people that are easy to get along with. Throughout history "extremists" of every stripe in every revolution have bested moderates through the force of arms or the force of will. That is why the belief of C. Holland Taylor is so troubling. Moderation can not be sustained as long as extremists exist. Anyone can see that Sharia, itself, is a form of extremism.
Closer to home we have the problem of naive American political and religious leadership. President Bush relies heavily on advisors such as Karen Hughes and on the writings of Muslim apologists such as Karen Armstrong.
it is disturbing to see how much influence Islam is beginning to have at the upper levels of American leadership. How do they do it? Through the use of money and influence peddling of course!
Update: Due to coverage of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, this slipped in under the radar.
Saturday, September 3, 2005, Karen Hughes did address the Islamic Society of North America, a "radical" Islamic front group, and praised them.
The Bush administration continues to be duped by slick operators that were in place during previous administrations.

ROSEMONT, Ill. (AP) - Karen Hughes, one of President Bush's closest advisers, told a gathering of American Muslims on Friday that part of her new State Department job is to help amplify the voices of groups like theirs that are condemning terrorism and religious extremism.
The Bush administration continues to be duped by slick operators that were in place during previous administrations.
