Didn't 9/11 and Now 7/7 Teach Us Anything About the Need for Border Security?
It really burns me up to read about how our borders remain porous through which anyone and anything can be brought through to be distributed throughout with impunity. Of course this situation has gone on for hundreds of years with little peril to us. In today's climate of madmen armed with nuclear and biological weapons, open borders are insane. After 9/11 and now 7/7 they are an extended impulse for civilizational suicide.
It seems that the whole world wants to come to the United States...and some are determined to let them.
The United States does need immigrants. We need immigrants that can make a positive contribution to our economy and our culture. We don't need some of those that are coming in at this time. Think of the visitors that you allow into your house, to interact with you and your children and into your family culture. Some will make a positive contribution and other won't. Those that enter into the United States should be held to the same standard.
Other Than Mexican? Welcome to America
Monday, July 11, 2005
LOS ANGELES — For many people around the world, the U.S.-Mexico border is a doorway to opportunity — one that's unlocked and wide open.
Brazilians, Chinese, Pakistanis and many others are joining the tide of Mexicans who sneak across every day.
"OTMs include people from all over the world — South America, the Middle East, the Caribbean," explained former Immigration and Naturalization Service Special Agent Michael W. Cutler, currently a fellow at the Center for Immigration Studies (search). "Anyone other than Mexican is an OTM."
In 2001, 5,251 "OTMs" were caught crossing over from Mexico. Last year, the number was more than 35,000.
In the first eight months of this fiscal year, it's up to 70,000 already — 230 people a day — and they're only the ones getting caught. Hundreds more make it across undetected, experts believe.
"The vulnerability of a porous border is a security problem, and we always have to be concerned that the real bad guys will exploit those vulnerabilities," said Frank Sharry, executive director of the National Immigration Forum (search).
